Join Bill Savage, co-curator of "Chicago Style: Mike Royko and Windy City Journalism," for a talk on the political history of the DNC in Chicago. During the 1968 Democratic National Convention, protesters chanted “The Whole World is Watching!” as the Chicago Police Department violently asserted its control over public spaces. Chicago Daily News columnist Mike Royko was watching, and reporting, on what was later defined as a “police riot.” Join us as Northwestern Professor Bill Savage examines the politics of protest, then and now, through the lens of Royko’s writing and the dynamic of public and semi-public, and private spaces in the city.

This event is part of programming connected with the Newberry's free exhibition, Chicago Style: Mike Royko and Windy City Journalism, running through September 28, 2024 and is cosponsored by the Newberry Library and Chicago Collections Consortium.
